Overview

On 13 June 2021 the State Government announced Western Australia’s Plan for Plastics.

The plan includes regulations to ban single-use plastic items in a two-stage approach. Stage 1 regulations came into effect on 1 January 2022.

Stage 2 regulations are now in effect and include the ban of:

  • produce bags
  • expanded plastic packaging
  • expanded plastic cups
  • coffee cups/lids
  • microbeads
  • cotton buds with plastic stems
  • lids for bowls/cups/take-away food containers
  • degradable plastics. 

Consultation for Stage 2 included the publication of a consultation regulatory impact statement along with online surveys and online workshops.

Stage 2 includes staggered enforcement timeframes for specified items, ranging from September 2023 to July 2025.
